After offering to buy the Italian automaker and turned down, Ford went ahead and producing a Ferrari-killing GT-40 that dominated the Le Mans racing circuit. Forty years later, and classic American muscle can still take down those fancy Italian Ferraris any day.
Still, even we were a bit skeptical that a 1965 Shelby Cobra could take down a brand-new, 2011 Ferrari 458 Italia. Carscoop came across this video showing these two cars from different eras lining up, with a wager of $400,000 riding on the outcome. Can the classic Cobra take down the prancing pony?
With 560 horsepower and a superior mid-engine setup, the Ferrari 458 has a huge technological advantage over the classic Cobra (which we’re not sure is an original or reproduction, though we’d wager it’s the latter.) Technology isn’t the determining factor in races though, as this “tricked-out” 427 Cobra roars to life and set some pretty intimidating qualifying times. This comes down to a significant weight advantage, as the Cobra only weighs around 2,000 pounds while the Ferrari weighs almost 900 pounds more. Even with the Ferrari’s launch control, it has its work cut out in beating this classic monster-engine Cobra.
And with $400,000 supposedly riding on the outcome of this one race, perhaps the Ferrari driver bit off more than he can chew in challenging this tricked out Cobra.To be honest, the “teaser” video is much better than the actual race (which doesn’t even start until 3-minutes in) and we won’t spoil the end result. But let’s just say that while we wouldn’t mind having either car in our dream garage, when it comes to out and out speed, Keep It Simple, Stupid.
