Fox-Body Mustang 1979-1993 (Including Mercury Capri 1979-1986)
Fox-body Mustangs, produced from 1979-1993, represent the third generation of Ford’s iconic pony car. Introduced in late 1978 as a 1979 model, the Fox Mustang and sister-car, Mercury Capri (1979-1986), proved wildly popular with enthusiasts looking for a lightweight, affordable performance car. Fox-body Mustangs are grouped as (early) 1979-1986 “four-eyes” cars for their quad-headlamp arrangement, and as (later) 1987-1993 “Aero” Mustangs, that featured flush-mounted Halogen headlamps and a cleaner-looking quarter-glass treatment. Despite humble beginnings with a mere 140-horsepower 302 2-barrel engine in 1979, Fox Mustangs gradually gained power during their run, reaching 235 horsepower in the final year with the 1993 SVT Cobra. In total, the Ford Motor Company produced a whopping 2,598,078 Fox Mustangs and 300,933 Mercury Capri hatchbacks.

Modifications are easy thanks to extensive parts exchangeability between most Fox models. This includes suspension, (some) body panels, plus engines and driveline components, customization is limitless. It’s common to upgrade virtually anything that can be removed. These modifications include BBK cold-air inlet kits, BBK throttle bodies, BBK headers, H- or X-pipe and exhaust muffler kits, wheel upgrades, suspension lowering and handling kits, chassis stiffening, shifter upgrades and much more.
The front suspension consists of a MacPherson strut with a separate coil spring mounted between the K-member and the lower A-arm. Brothersperformance. com sells a wide variety of front suspension components to enhance cornering, braking and acceleration. Enthusiasts commonly swap the bulky K-member for a tubular version, along with installing coil-over front struts and an improved anti-roll bar.

A Fox stock rear suspension consists of four control arms (also called trailing arms) mounted between the rear axle housing and the unitized (unibody) chassis. Coil springs rest on each of the lower control arms and some models were equipped with a rear anti-roll bar, also mounted between the lower arms. Often, the rear bushings wear out, which is an easy fix by installing aftermarket rear control arms.

Fox Mustangs were offered in coupe (notchback), hatchback, and convertible models, and there are dozens of sub-options and trim packages including the Ghia, GL, GLX, Turbo GT, Cobra, SVO, LX, GT, Capri RS, and many more. While the early Fox Mustangs sold well, they really gained momentum with the return of the four-barrel carburetor-equipped Mustang GT in 1982. In 1983 the GT received a healthier version of the 5. 0L engine and a convertible option, too. The LX also made its way back to the lineup, and Ford introduced the EEC computer along with the CFI (central fuel injection) on V8 automatic-equipped models. Big news for 1984 was the Euro-looking SVO, equipped with the 175 hp 2. 3L four-cylinder turbo engine.
Mustang enthusiasts agree that 1985 was a banner year. A body makeover gave the LX and GT models their cleanest look yet, and Ford revised the 5. 0 H. O. engine with a new performance-minded hydraulic roller camshaft, improved cylinder heads, and tubular headers. These improvements bumped output by 35 horsepower, which put the Mustang solidly in the 14-second quarter-mile zone. All V8 Mustangs were backed by either a Tremec T5 or AOD automatic overdrive transmission.

The 1986 Mustang GT looked nearly identical to the ’85, but there are big changes lurking underneath. Ford debuted its new electronic fuel injection (EFI) on the 5. 0L engine with a tuned-port intake manifold that produced much greater torque and greatly enhance mid-range power. Mustang fans can credit this innovation, along with the EEC-IV computer and later the mass air version for catapulting performance. Of course you can tell an ’86 from an ’85 by the additional brake light mounted in the rear spoiler. In addition to the EFI, Ford also upgraded the rear axle from the 7. 5-inch unit to the beefier the 8. 8-inch rear. Gear swaps are one of the most common modifications. Popular upgrades to the 8. 8 are 3. 73 or 4. 10 gears, stronger 31-spline axles, a performance differential and a rear-housing girdle.

Perhaps the most significant change to the Fox Mustang came in 1987 when Ford added 15 horsepower, and redesigned the body and interior. This gave the Fox a fresh, modern look, and the 225 horsepower (300 lb-ft of torque) gave the GT and 5. 0L LX models enough power to compete and win against rival Buick Grand Nationals and GM’s F-body contingent. This combination proved to be a winner with not only enthusiasts.

The overwhelming attractiveness of the Ford Mustang continued until 1993 when Ford redesigned the Fox platform for the 1994 model year, calling it the Fox-4 chassis. And while some models are now 30-plus years old, the Fox-body Mustang remains of the most popular muscle cars. It’s a favorite of all forms of street enthusiasts and weekend warriors, hardcore drag racers, road racers, autocrossers and more.
