Here's an update on my '66:
I've decided to tackle the engine/trans swap on my own. :yikes: I've started tear down and should have the current 289/C-4 out of the car this weekend. Then I can get the engine bay cleaned up and painted. Hopefully I'll have the new X302/AOD in and running in the next few weeks. Would love to make the Hershey run with the new setup!!

Engine and trans came out yesterday. Turns out this needed to be done. The rear main was leaking, the #7 cylinder was wet (the rest were burning a nice greyish tan), the starter was a bit chewed up, I had fuel pooled under the carb, and the trans was leaking from various locations. Now to clean up the engine bay....

Can you use the stock shifter setup with the C4 to AOD conversion? Having overdrive will be nice...

From what I've read, I should be able to use the stock shifter. The c-4 is a cruise-o-matic so I have the green dot pattern on the shifter. Should be fine and I can keep it looking stock.

Update!!!

The new engine and trans went in today. Now to start with getting the rest of it in. Unfortunately, my ceramic coated tri-y's don't fit, they hit the bell housing on the passenger side. Any shorty header recommendations would be appreciated...

Looking really nice and you should be popping wheelies in no time. :3gears:

No wheelies until I get rid of the 14" roller skate wheels! As far as headers, I'm considering either the Patriot clipsters or the JBA Cat4ward's....

The JBA are nice. But they are expensive. I am looking at the 1650-2 for my combo.

Can you send the tri-Ys back?

Did you mention what you are doing about the ignition? That distributor hookup wire look modern.

Unfortunately, I can't send the tri's back. I picked them up on Craigslist about two years ago. So it looks like I'll be putting them up for sale.

The dizzy and alternator are indeed modern. I don't have enough experience to pick the right setup with confidence and still avoid frying the old electrical wiring... Any suggestions would be welcome (MSD?)

Well, I dropped the big bucks :yikes: and ordered a set of Sanderson Headers. They are configured to work with the AOD application so I shouldn't have any fitment issues.

Here's the link for the curious...

The Tri's are posted to the classifieds....

That is also one of my options for my configuration. A lot of good references for those headers on VMF. Interesting that they don't want you to use any header gaskets. I don't have any advice on the Dizzy. I have never looked at an aftermarket ignition system.

I have read that some Tri-Ys headers will work with my GT-40p heads. Is it possible for me to met you somewhere and test fit my GT-40p heads with your Tri-Ys?

Dave, Check your PM...

The dizzy came with the engine so I don't know anything about it. The guy I bought it from didn't give me any documentation. I think it's one of Summit's in house items.

I did a little digging. It looks real simple.

"Note: Check to see that your coil location will reach the distributor when wired.

Step 1 Remove the two nuts from the positive and negative towers on the ignition coil.
Step 2 Slide the red wire with “O” ring over the positive (+) terminal on the coil and the
orange wire over the negative (-) terminal. Put the nuts and lock washers back onto the
terminals and tighten (do not over tighten).
Step 3 Install the ground or black wire with “O” ring terminal to a nearby solid ground.
Step 4 Plug the two mating Weather Pack connectors together

Note: To install with a CD ignition box, please refer to the instructions that come with the ignition "

Thanks to Dave Rummel for the assist/help/oversight in getting the new U joints installed on the drive shaft. It is much appreciated!

Update:
Just about ready to fire things up. I'll need a bit of help getting the ignition/wiring hooked (joys of being colorblind). Once the engine is running, I'll need to get the AOD dialed in and get the exhaust welded in (Magnaflows).
Can't wait to drive her again!!!

Here are some pics...

So close and yet so far. I am able to get the engine to turn over, but I have no spark. Unfortunately, I've reached the limit of my shade tree knowledge. Is there anyone out there with ignition know how willing to make a house call (Severn)??? My appreciation would definitely be properly expressed!!! :clinkmugs:

What is your coil voltage with the key in the on position?
