We received the new 9” rear, axles, and center section last week. Today we prepped it for paint.

All the parts were well packed; this is how sheet metal should be shipped!

Primed and painted, we will press on the axles bearing tomorrow and assemble the rear this weekend.
Thanks!

I spent the morning driving to the Eastern Shore to look at a 1968 Dodge Charger that had too much rust to consider buying, so I’m still looking. This afternoon we continued the monotonous bodywork.
Thanks!

We assembled the new 9” rear and looking forward to installing it in the car when we finish the body work and paint.

With the bolts loctited on for 24 hr we installed the 3rd member

I used a friends press to install the axel bearings and we cut the studs and loctited them on at 60 ft lb.
Funny how much longer one is from the other.

Axel and brakes installed and will make custom S/S brake lines next week.

Kurt welded in the backup lights as the Bullitt car doesn’t have them and I’m still working on somehow hiding some backup lights.

We received the re-chromed vent window from Paul’s Chrome and as I have come to expect from Paul’s they are perfect. We have yet to order new glass or weather stripping.
Who makes the best fitting replacement glass and weather stripping?
Thanks!

We did a little head light bucket repair as there was a few cracks and one attachment flange missing. And Kurt finished striping the paint on the roof.

Image

Image

Image

Image

After cutting a small piece of aluminum to fit the missing flange we used some steel mesh to help hold the flange. Then used JB weld to glue the mesh and flange together.

Image

Image

Image

Worked great and is very strong.

Image

Almost all the old white paint is off the car and it is getting closes to putting green paint back on. Thanks!

We are still moving right along with the body work, and we fitting the left side headlight bucket.

Image

Image

Image

From the rockers to the roof and everything in between, sand, sand, and more sanding.

Image

Image

The headlight buckets fit poorly but with some work the left side fits great. Next is the right bucket.
Thanks & Marry Christmas!

For Christmas we gave Kurt an Old-Air AC system and a Total Control front suspension system for the Mustang.

Image

Image

Image

The Old Air system is ½ the size of the original heat only system and it works with new original looking controls so from the inside it will look like a stock AC car. On the engine side it will look different as the AC & heat line go in place of the original fan motor. We will start on this project in a few months.

Image

There are a lot of suspension systems available for old Mustangs and they all have advantages and disadvantages, in the end we picked the Total Control system as we liked the Tech we talked with, and it was a bolt in system that uses the shock towers.
Thanks!

Tonight we installed the adjustable timing gear set and checked the camshaft timing.

Image

Image

Image

We started with the gear set installed in the 0 position and after finding TDC on the #1 cylinder we mounted and marked the degree wheel at 0 degrees. Then with the roller lifter installed we set the dial indicator on the intake lifter and rotated the crank until the intake lifter just started moving up to .006 at that point the cam card said it should be at 34 degrees BTDC and ours was at 34.5 degrees BTDC.
Thanks!

We painted the block and a few other engine parts today.

Image

Image

Image

Image

With the block taped we used the head & timing chain cover gaskets to cut the tape to shape for painting.

It was 63 degrees in MD today and with the sun it made for a great day to paint the motor. It’s a little more work to paint the motor apart but it is worth the extra time.
Thanks & Happy New Year!
Pat

Back to the body work tonight, Kurt still fine tuning the rockers and I started fitting the hood inserts.

Image

Body filler on

Image

And body filler off! Fun!

Image

Image

The repro hood inserts fit so-so but with a little Dremel work on the back side and some 80 grit block sanding on top they fit great.

Image

Image

The new hood has a few low spots around the insert that need a little filler.
Thanks!

Saturday we received our Edelbrock performer head, thanks to the Summit sales!

To date we have used 1 gal of Evercoat Z-grip and 1 qt of Everglass fiberglass reinforced filler, most of it ending up on the shop floor.

I think we are a ½ gal of body filler from being finished with the body work???
Thanks!

We received all the new glass for the car last week in a well packed box. The new glass is cut and shaped just like the original glass and looks like it will fit just fine! So tonight we assembled the right side vent window.

Image

Image

We had an old vent window from another car to help assemble the original vent window we had re-chromed.

Image

Image

Image

Image

We used a thin black foam double sided tape to hold the new glass into the frame. I used this same tape on other cars I’ve restored and it works great as you can remove the plastic film after the glass is in place. After it is cut it looks original.

Image

Image

Image

Image

All we need is the new vent window handles to show up that we order 5 weeks ago and they will be complete.
Thanks!
Pat

More bodywork last night as Kurt is getting the hang of working with the filler.

Image
Image
Image
The rockers are getting close to being done just need to clean up the details like the stamp number and drains on the bottom.

Image
The shop was busy last night as our good friend Alex was working on his 1st car a 72 Dodge Challenger that he bought back last year from selling it over 25 years ago. It’s a great story how he tracked it down and convinced the owner to sell it to him.
Thanks!

We pulled the headliner down and noted the bow color and location. Not sure if it is correct as this is not the original headliner.

Image

Image

The bow were color marked on the left side with red at the front, green in the middle, and pink at the back.

We also modified our stud welder to fit the back window channel so we could weld the stud on the new quarters.
Thanks!

We decided to use the 65/66 round Mustang mirrors as it looks similar to what was used on the bullitt car. We will also install a right side mirror and mount both in the factory location for safety. The mirrors will get painted green like the movie car.

Image

The original rectangular mirrors have a longer base.

Image

Image

We will weld up the aft hole and double check the vent window clears. The mirror is not exact nor is it mounted low like the movie car but with two mirrors it was best to mount high as original.

Image

We also remove all of the rear interior panel brackets and screw them one at a time to a piece of cardboard to document there location and orientation. Then sand blasted, and painted them along with screws
Thanks!

Pat
