Post subject:  Cleaning My New Headlights

I had new headlights installed about a year and a half ago on my 2002 Mustang. These are large, clear lenses that I have polished and cleaned to keep them looking new.

The other day while washing the car I noticed a clear, raised film which you can feel with your fingernail. I used a special headlight cleaning lens cleaner applied with a clean cloth and rubbed vigorously into the affected area without much success.

I am hesitant to use a wet sandpaper as I don't want to scratch the clear lens cover. I'm thinking about using a Mother's or Meguiar's lens cleaning system with a cordless drill and special applicators.

Has anyone else had this problem? What causes this buildup? What have you used to correct the problem?

Any suggestions would be welcome!

Thanks,

Its probably an anti-scratch coating that has started to haze up. I had a windshield on my Harley that hazed up. I ended up stripping the coating with nail polish remover (I know pretty harsh) and got another 2 more seasons out of it til I picked up a nice used one.

My brother Alan has the same problem with his 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse. He has the newer headlights like mine and today we experimented with several products that did not really take care of the problem.

He used a mildly abrasive metal/plastic polish that he applied with a special mildly abrasive sponge which only slightly helped out but clearly scratched his lenses. He then tried mineral spirits without any results.

The next time he works on the car he will try using Flitz cleaner/polish with a drill. He has used this in the past to clean other headlights with success.

Dan,

Where can you get this plexiglass cleaner? Auto supply store? Home Depot?
A paint store like Sherwin Williams?
