 Post subject: U-Joint Internal Snap Ring Removal

Need a bit of guidance. I purchased a snap ring pliers kit to remove the internal snap rings on the drive shaft u joints, but can't get it to work. I've tried using the different heads that came with the kit, but can't seem to get the ring to expand without the pliers slipping off. Is there a trick to getting the snap rings out?

Any help/advise is appreciated.

Penetrating fluid
Heat
Physical impact to break the rust free.
Scratch at each ear with a screwdriver to make sure they are not bound/rusted into place.


I don't like snap rings either.

I fortunately didn't have any rust to deal with. Just a bit of grease.

I manged to get the rings out by wedging a phillips on one side of the internal ring to keep it from spinning and tapping the other side of the ring with a flathead and hammer. I bent the crap out of the first one getting my "technique" down, but popped the rest out with no other problems. Once that was done, the u joints came out with a little coaxing using a socket and hammer.

My next step is to get the new u-joints in and attach the AOD slip yoke. The bench vice I have is too small to do the socket trick so I'm thinking of just going to a shop and have them pressed in correctly.

Lots of Vintage Mustang owners like their AOD swaps. Enjoy the ride. I am thinking of doing the same swap in mine. But that is a long time off.

Are you interested in selling your old C4?
