My wife and I adopted another dog after we lost our beloved Lu to cancer in January.
We rescued a two year old American Staffordshire Bull Terrier who we named Kelsey. We were not looking specifically for a Pit Bull but my wife fell in love with this very personable pup when we first saw her at The Association for Animal Rescue in Reisterstown.
We were so impressed with this small non-profit no kill shelter that I nominated them to be one our charities for the coming year. We are very grateful that they were chosen to be one of our sponsors.
They kept "Baby" for over a year and made her unavailable to people who they felt would not provide her a proper home. This poor pup spent half of her life in a shelter and they other half roaming the streets of Dundalk.
We signed her up for dog obedience training with the Dog Owner Training Club, an AKC Registered training course. The course ran for eight weeks on Wednesday evenings causing me to miss several MCOM Meetings. But that is the price of responsible dog ownership.
Kelsey passed all of her training exercises and graduated gaining the respect of all of her trainers. Most had perceptions of a strong Pit Bull Terrier but were won over by her friendliness and her intelligence.
We will pursue training her on our own to reinforce what she has learned in class. This means a lot to a dog who started out life to fend for herself on the streets. She now has a loving home where she is treated like a queen.
